Kilkenny’s Vicky Phelan named in BBC list of 100 ‘inspiring and influential women’

Congratulations to the incredible #vickyphelan who has been named by the BBC as one of the most inspiring and influential women of 2018 from around the globe. 
Vicky is truly an #inspiringirishwoman of our times. How proud we are of you Vicky. 
The BBC News who compiled the list of 100 women from all over the world described these women “as leaders, trailblazers and everyday heroes”. 
#cervicalcancer campaigner Vicky has been included in this international list of women, chosen in recognition of their outstanding contributions to society. The women come from all over the world and work in many varied fields, both voluntarily and professionally, and all have made a profound difference to others through their endeavours.
Vicky who is 44-years-old was chosen for exposing the #cervicalcheckscandalafter discovering that she had been given an incorrect smear result. She refused to be silenced by an attempted gagging order after she took her case to court and this led to the revelation that other women had been denied the truth, to be exact 221 women so far.

​  75) Vicky Phelan, 44 – Educational manager, Ireland.
Vicky exposed the CervicalCheck Screening scandal in Ireland, after discovering she and hundreds of other women were not told they had been given incorrect smear test results.
The most senior is 94-year-old Helen Taylor Thompson who was a coder during WW2 and went on to set up Europes first Aid’s hospice.
Among the younger woman is 19-year-old, refugee and student, Nujeen Mustafa, who had to travel thousands of miles in her wheelchair after fleeing Syria and now campaigns for refugees with disabilities in her adopted home in Germany.
In depth interviews with these amazing women will be broadcast on BBC World News television, with a selection also airing on BBC World News radio as part of the broadcasters 100 Women season.
